The core difference

A VPN wraps ALL your OS-level traffic in an encrypted tunnel. A SOCKS5 proxy forwards ONE connection you explicitly configure.

Encryption

VPN: encrypted end-to-end (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2). SOCKS5: not encrypted — the tunnel is opaque but not encrypted.

Speed

SOCKS5 is typically faster because there's no encryption overhead. This matters at scale.

IP diversity

VPN: usually a single exit IP per session. SOCKS5: rotating pools of thousands to millions of IPs.

When to use each

Use a VPN for general privacy, geo-unblocking Netflix, or protecting all your OS-level traffic on public Wi-Fi.

Use SOCKS5 when your workload needs IP rotation, high concurrency, per-connection control, or scraping.

Combining them
